Mare Island Naval Shipyard Re-Development, Vallejo, CA
Mare Island was the nation’s first naval shipyard on the West Coast, established in 1854 and ultimately closed in 1996. Lennar Mare Island’s portion of this re-development project encompassed approximately 650 acres. Included in the Mare Island Reuse Plan are 1,400 homes, roughly 7 million square feet of commercial and industrial space, plus many recreational amenities. The new mixed-use, master-planned community is being developed through a unique public/private partnership between the City of Vallejo and Lennar Mare Island, LLC.
John Stitt, PE managed several subdivision projects on the island, providing a wide variety of professional services including photogrammetric and site control surveys, infrastructure analysis, grading and drainage design, sewer system rehabilitation, water system upgrades, railroad realignment, pavement evaluation and reconstruction, traffic design, commercial and residential subdivision design, estimating, scheduling, coordination of design phasing with environmental remediation actions, Federal, state, and private property transfer documents, and establishment of benefit districts.
Also assisted with Federal grant applications, prepared plans for phasing of grant-funded area-wide improvements, and provided on-going coordination with the environmental cleanup contractors, city public works and planning staff, railroad operator, landscape consultants, historic preservation board, commercial tenants, and geotechnical consultants.
Providing significant design and construction management to the industrial areas, including the Dry Docks, as Allied Defense Recycler (ADR) brings back the operation of the Mare Island Ship Yard (MISY).
