Carson Ice-Gen Project, Design/Build Elkgrove, California
Carson Energy Plant, SMUDJohn Stitt, PE, designed the civil improvements for the Carson Ice-Gen Project, a cogeneration facility that uses natural gas and sewer treatment plant digester gas (methane) to produce electricity and stream. The steam powers the 300 ton per day Glacier Ice Company centrifugal ice making equipment. The electricity goes into the SMUD electrical grid. Constructed on a 10 acre site, the civil plans included the access roadway, pavement design, parking facilities and diesel truck loading dock and concrete paving, site layout and control, site utilities, structural foundation layout, storm drain hydrology and hydraulics and coordination between complex mechanical and electrical underground and above ground facilities. Unique design of storm drain system saved $200K for Oil/Water separation facilities necessary for NPDES compliance. Total site design costs were $3.6 million and total project costs $75 million. The project was so successful it won the Company’s Facility Group Project of the Year award.
